Douglas Cook, DDS, is a graduate of the Marquette School of Dentistry in Wisconsin and served as a commissioned officer in the United States Air Force. He joined his father in his dental clinic where he has practiced dentistry for the last 50 years in Suring, Wisconsin. Cook presently practices at his dental clinic located on the South Branch of the the beautiful Oconto River, in northern Wisconsin.
Dr. Cook’s evolution as a holistic dentist was formed by his own personal experience. “My experience that took place sixteen years ago, involved a painful elbow that almost ended my dental career,” he explains on his dentistry website. “Severe pain would not allow me to reach for dental instruments or extract a tooth that required any strength. An evaluation of my teeth with a Digital Computerized Meter pointed to a dead tooth that had no clinical symptoms. Removal of the tooth relieved the pain in my elbow, and allowed me to continue to practice dentistry.” For the past 28 years, he has focused his dentistry practice on the critical health needs not addressed in our dental schools today.
Dr. Cook will be presenting at this year’s Holistic Oral Health Summit. His topic, “Rescued By My Dentist: Restoring Energy and Vitality,” will cover the following points:

Conventional dentistry leaves dead tissue in the body
Regarding toxic materials, Dr. Cook points out that “50% of dental amalgams (a ‘silver’ filling) is mercury – which is constantly coming off the filling with brushing your teeth or chewing. So, we get methylmercury fumes from the amalgams and that is really hard on our health.” As for gold fillings, it is known to cause depression, he notes. “And nickel is found to be related to cancer. So, we have to be very careful what we put into the oral cavity.” Regarding metal fillings in general, he summarizes: “Remember, we are all electrical. But, then you add this electricity from mixed metals placed in the mouth and this can cause an upset to many organ systems.”
Dr. Cook also makes an interesting observation about dead dental tissue: “The root canal is a dead tooth. And the body does not tolerate dead tissue. In fact, you can’t think of any other place where dead tissue is left in the body by the medical profession – except dentistry.” He illustrates the point with a revealing anecdote. “A patient came in with head pain for 64 years. And, when I looked at her X-ray – she had 2 root canals and no one looked at that, after years of pain and seeing 33 health experts. So, I asked her if we could use a local anesthetic to see if I could turn off the pain and she was very sarcastic in saying I don’t think you can find it because I’ve been to the very best. So, we put the anesthetic over the tip of her roots and in 45 seconds the pain was gone in her head. She was so happy that we could find what the problem was and on the next appointment we removed the root canal and cleaned up the metals in her mouth and she was doing very well the last time I spoke to her.”
