In case you didn’t think antibiotics were enough of a nuisance already, here’s some more “good” news for you! Studies show that antibiotic use can actually lead to disrupted intestinal flora for up to one year, potentially causing antibiotic resistance and even more harmful diseases.
Different antibiotics affect the body differently. For example, amoxicillin hasn’t shown itself to cause significantly disrupted gut bacteria, but it has the highest rate of contribution towards antibiotic resistant bacteria. Ciprofloxacin, however, has been shown to disrupt intestinal flora activity for up to a year.
The research, published in mBio, concludes that antibiotics should be used sparingly, and only when absolutely necessary. The researchers themselves caution that even a single use of antibiotics can raise your chances of developing antibiotic resistance.
After 70 years, it’s not terribly surprising that bacteria have adapted. Antibiotic resistant bacteria infect over 2 million people in just the United States alone each year. 23,000 of these people will eventually succumb to their illness. It is unfortunate that traditional medicine often shuns natural remedies that could help curb this rising threat. If you really care about your health, it’s better to explore healthier, natural remedies to alleviate your sickness.
