If you’re looking for a sweet treat that won’t ruin your teeth, look no further than the old favorite, licorice. That’s right! Recent studies suggest that licorice can actually be good for your teeth. This is due to the fact that licorice can help reduce the number of harmful bacteria in your mouth and on your teeth.
However, most “licorice” candies don’t actually contain licorice, but instead are made of anise. So, be sure to find a good natural licorice candy. Don’t just buy something from the gas station and expect it to work its magic on your pearly whites.
Chewing on licorice root or eating candied licorice helps promote good oral health due to special active properties within it. These properties break down the protective barriers in the bacteria that cause tooth decay. This both kills off the bacteria, and prevents them from multiplying.
Licorice also has many other health benefits. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory herb, as well as a great way to help treat sore throats and coughs.
