Managing metabolic syndrome with integrated naturopathy and yoga

During the course of treatment for a 50-year-old male patient with metabolic syndrome, a case study determined that Integrated Yoga and Naturopathy (IYN) showed promise in the management of metabolic syndrome (MetS). The researchers registered reduction in parameters associated with the patient’s cluster of medical conditions.

The case study was published in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine.

  • The sole participant of the study was a 50-year-old male with a sedentary lifestyle who suffered from MetS. He had been diagnosed with obesity, type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypothyroidism since 2013.
  • The participant received an IYN treatment featuring individualized yoga and naturopathy protocols designed for his particular conditions. The treatment lasted for six weeks with a follow-up at 12 weeks.
  • The case showed reduction in weight (97.9 kg to 74.6 kg), body mass index (35.1 kg/m2 to 27.86 kg/m2), total cholesterol (192 mg% to 145 mg%), triglycerides (153 mg% to 90 mg%), low-density lipoprotein (124 mg% to 81 mg%), high-density lipoprotein (40 mg% to 46 mg%), fasting blood glucose (110 mg/dl to 75 mg/dl), postprandial glucose (267 mg/dl to 100 mg/dl), glycated hemoglobin (7.8 percent to 7.1 percent), and thyroid stimulating hormone (6.90 ?IU/ml to 3.052 ?IU/ml).
  • Furthermore, the participant reported a reduction in knee pain and also expressed a greater feeling of wellness and overall health.
  • During the follow-up, researchers observed that the participant’s parameters remained within normal range. He reported incorporating the IYN program into his daily routine. The participant was no longer required to take his extensive array of anti-hypertensive, oral hypoglycemic, thyroid-raising, and analgesic medicines.

Given the outcome of the case study, the researchers propose that IYN could be integrated into MetS management as a a safe and beneficial form of intervention that does not require pharmaceuticals.
