Chinese herbal medicine Yu ping feng san is an effective treatment for adult allergic rhinitis

Yu ping feng san, a Chinese herbal medicine, was proven safe and effective as an allergic rhinitis treatment in a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

• Researchers from the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in China and RMIT University in Australia conducted a systematic review to assess the safety and effectiveness of Yu ping feng san in treating allergic rhinitis.
• They also attempted to identify the medicine’s specific duration of use through subgroup meta-analyses.
• Twenty-two randomized controlled trials involving 23 comparisons were included in the review, wherein Yu ping feng san was compared to placebo, pharmacotherapy, and used as an additional treatment compared to pharmacotherapy.
• The three herbs in the Yu ping feng san formula include: Astragalus membranaceus (huang qi), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (bai zhu), and Radix Ledebouriellae Divaricatae (fang feng).
• Yu ping feng san alone may improve allergic rhinitis symptoms, but was not as effective as when it was combined with other treatments.
• Yu ping feng san‘s combination treatment improved the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as itchy nose, sneezing, blocked nose, and runny nose.
• Yu ping feng san was also found to be more effective when used for more than three weeks.
• The use of Yu ping feng san was considered safe.

The findings of the review indicated that Yu ping feng san is effective and safe for the treatment of adult allergic rhinitis, although more research is needed.
