The founder of an alliance for detransitioners has officially endorsed Alberta’s pro-family policy that bans sex reassignment surgery on minors.
On Oct. 31, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith of the province’s ruling United Conservative Party introduced Bill 26, titled the “Health Statutes Amendment Act of 2024.”
The bill, sponsored by Alberta Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange, seeks to amend the province’s Health Act by prohibiting regulated health professionals from performing sex reassignment surgeries on minors. The bill would also ban the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapies for children aged 15 and younger while allowing youth aged 16 and 17 to access such treatments only with parental, physician and psychological approval.
Kellie-Lynn Annette Pirie, founder of Detrans Alliance Canada, explained that the policy was influenced by accounts from detransitioners who regret undergoing hormone therapies and surgeries. She recounted stories from young detransitioners, some as young as 17, who felt unprepared for the life-altering decisions they made. She shared one case of a young girl who, after receiving hormone blockers and a double mastectomy, expressed regret. Her doctor, counselor and support group reportedly refused to engage with her when she attempted to stop her transition.
Pirie, who underwent hormone therapy and surgeries herself in the early 2000s, went on and spoke candidly about her own experiences.
“That is a decision that I will live with for the remainder of my life,” she lamented. “I made this decision as an adult. I simply cannot understand how, if I as a 37-year-old woman with a postsecondary education wasn’t ready to make such a life-altering decision, [we can] possibly support, encourage or allow our children to do so?” (Related: Alberta premier introduces bill BANNING the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.)
Pirie applauded Smith for this bill and officially gave her support for the policy.
“Today Premier Smith has put forward will be putting forward legislation that is vital to preserving the rights for children to make informed adult decisions as adults,” Pirie said on Oct. 31. “I am here today because I am proud to support these changes that specifically outline the boundaries and safety measures to ensure children and youth will be insulated from irreversible surgical alterations and life-altering pharmaceutical interventions prior to their obtaining the degree of physiological maturity necessary to understand how these interventions will impact their future.”
In a separate statement, Smith supported the claims of Pirie that the bill is inspired by stories of irreversible consequences suffered by young people who underwent similar treatments abroad.
Smith cited the 2019 investigation into the Tavistock Center in the United Kingdom, a National Health Service clinic once recognized as the leading “gender clinic” for children experiencing gender dysphoria. The investigation revealed that the clinic had approved hormone therapy and other interventions for minors without conclusive evidence of their long-term effects. These findings eventually led to the temporary closure of the clinic.
According to Smith, she was touched by the story of Keira Bell, a former Tavistock patient, who has become one of the most well-known voices on the subject. Bell, who began gender transition treatments as a teenager, now deeply regrets the process, especially the medical interventions she received, including puberty blockers, testosterone injections and a double mastectomy at age 20. She later joined a lawsuit against the clinic, arguing that she was too young to consent to such life-altering procedures.
This story represents just one of many. “It is so important that all youth can enter adulthood equipped to make adult decisions. In order to do that, we need to preserve their ability to make those decisions, and that’s what we’re doing,” Smith said. “The changes we’re introducing are founded on compassion and science, both of which are vital for the development of youth throughout a time that can be difficult and confusing.”
