Bee propolis – also known as “bee glue” – is a sticky substance derived from tree resin collected by bees.

From NaturalHealth365:

“Bee propolis begins as a resin secreted by trees. Bees metabolize it, and the resulting substance is about 30 percent beeswax, 55 percent resins and 10 percent aromatic oils and ethers. It is responsible for creating a sterile, safe environment within bee hives, so it’s no surprise that it has antibiotic, antiviral and other healing properties.”

Bees gather the sap during warm weather, blending it with wax flakes they store in their abdomens. The resulting mixture is rolled into a ball by the bee and then stored in the pollen basket attached to the bee’s leg. Once a bee gathers enough propolis, it takes it back to the hive.

From HerbWisdom.com:

“At this point, the propolis is unloaded and used to patch up holes in the hive. Bees also use propolis as an antiseptic barrier covering invaders with the sticky substance to prevent hive contamination.”

Bee propolis health benefits

NaturalHealth365 has listed nine health benefits of bee propolis. These include:

Cancer-fighting properties – Propolis has been shown to be effective in killing cancer cells. Unlike other mainstream cancer treatments, propolis kills only cancer cells, leaving healthy cells unharmed.

Bone health – Propolis helps in the growth and maintenance of healthy bones. It fights inflammation and stops bones from deteriorating.

Food poisoning treatment – Due to its antimicrobial properties, the three most common microorganisms associated with food poisoning – Enterobacter faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus and C. jejuni – can be fought using bee propolis.

Inflammation relief – Bee propolis is an effective treatment for oral inflammation and infections. Its anti-inflammatory properties are also useful in the treatment of arthritis, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Blood pressure management – Bee propolis can be used to decrease TH (Tyrosine hydroxylase) enzyme activity. This enzyme can inhibit the production of nitric oxide, which is important for healthy hearts. Propolis reduces hypertension and helps keep blood pressure at healthy levels.

Wart removal – Applied topically, propolis can get rid of often difficult-to-remove plantar warts. A daily application for two weeks should do the trick.

Allergy relief – Propolis blocks histamine response, making it an effective treatment against allergy symptoms such as runny noses and itchy red eyes.

Protection against heat stress – Due to its combined antioxidant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and other properties, propolis can protect against heat exhaustion while also improving athletic performance in high temperature environments.

Illness prevention and treatment for infections – The various health-boosting properties of bee propolis can help in treating and preventing colds, flu and other germ-transmitted illnesses. Propolis fights a wide range of bacteria, viruses and fungi and provides a general boost to the entire immune system.

Propolis available in lozenges, capsules and topical applications

Bee propolis is available in many forms, including lozenges that are effective in treating sore throats, capsules that can be taken internally, and tinctures, gels or ointments for topical use. People who have a history of allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to bee stings or other bee products may also experience similar reactions to bee propolis. Always read the label before using any propolis products and consult with a health care provider if you have any questions.

For most people, however, using bee propolis is a completely safe and natural way to boost your health and treat a variety of common ailments.

Lasik eye procedures may result in disruptive visual symptoms /medicine/2017-01-15-lasik-eye-procedures-may-result-in-disruptive-visual-symptoms /medicine/2017-01-15-lasik-eye-procedures-may-result-in-disruptive-visual-symptoms#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-15-lasik-eye-procedures-may-result-in-disruptive-visual-symptoms With millions of Americans undergoing LASIK surgery each year, most might assume that the procedure is completely safe and harmless, but a recent study showed that a significant percentage of LASIK patients developed new vision problems after the treatment was performed.

LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. In the procedure, a laser beam is used to reshape and flatten the cornea, improving the eye’s focusing power.

LASIK is the most common method of correcting vision through surgery, and clinics across the country offer the procedure at affordable rates.

In 2009, the the FDA, the National Eye Institute (NEI), and the Department of Defense (DoD) launched a collaborative effort called the LASIK Quality of Life Collaboration Project (LQOLCP), with the goal of better assessing the risks of LASIK and developing tools for accurately determining the percentage of patients who experienced problems after the procedure.

The group’s initial findings indicated that LASIK surgery was indeed quite safe, with only a tiny percentage of patients reporting any side effects.

From The Washington Post:

“At the time, there were a lot of anecdotes flying around but little scientific information about patient outcomes. The results, published in October 2014, showed that some patients developed problems that adversely affected their day-to-day lives, such as difficulty driving at night or in sunshine. But it was such a small number — less than 1 percent — of the patients in the study that it was difficult to draw any strong conclusions from that data.”

New study reveals that more than 40% of LASIK patients experience new symptoms after surgery

Now, two years later (November 2016), the group has published a follow-up report in JAMA Ophthalmology – and the results are quite different this time around:

“The study suggests that the percentage of people who undergo LASIK and wind up with new visual symptoms — such as double images, glare, halos or starbursts — may be much higher. The data was based on a questionnaire that looked at patient satisfaction with their vision and at visual and dry-eye symptoms following surgery.”

The researchers analyzed data from two groups of patients. Among the first group, which consisted of 262 active Navy personnel, 43 percent of LASIK patients reported new symptoms. Of the second group, made up of 312 civilians, 46 percent reported new symptoms. 28 percent overall experienced dry-eye symptoms for the first time, ranging from mild to severe. (RELATED: Read more news about the failures and successes of modern medicine and Medicine.news)

Most LASIK patients “satisfied,” despite postoperative symptoms

However, most of the study participants – more than 95 percent – reported being satisfied with the results of the surgery.

The new problems were reported to be relatively minor and in most cases did not affect normal function.

The researchers believe that the discrepancy between the older studies and the latest one is accounted for by the tendency of questionnaire respondents to be more forthcoming than when directly interviewed by health care professionals. The reluctance of patients to discuss “negative” events with their doctors has been well-documented, according to the team.

The authors of the study say that theirs is the first to identify new postoperative symptoms in LASIK patients. They also call for patients to be “adequately counseled” regarding the risk of developing new symptoms after the procedure.

Competition has driven the price of LASIK surgery down in recent years – you’ve probably seen the television commercials offering LASIK for as little as a few hundred dollars per eye.

At prices that low, it may be tempting to opt for the procedure – and although many believe LASIK can be considered a safe and affordable alternative to wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses, there are experts who warn that the procedure can be quite dangerous.

Potential LASIK patients should be aware that no surgery is ever “perfect,” and for many there may be some uncomfortable side effects – at least for the first few months after the surgery is performed.

It’s also important to keep in mind that this latest study focused on only a small group of patients. There are many reports of serious complications from LASIK surgery – including blindness – so it’s important to research the subject thoroughly before deciding to have it done.

The DEA just listed CBD as a Schedule I Controlled Substance… what happens next? Is this a massive power grab to try to criminalize all hemp extracts, even when they contain virtually no THC? Or is it just an administrative housekeeping announcement for international treaty compliance?

The hemp industry says this move by the DEA is no big deal, and they’re even prepared to challenge it in the courts. I’ve been told by some of the largest CBD product companies in America that they aren’t going to stop selling their CBD hemp extracts.

This may put the hemp extract industry on a collision course with the DEA. But with Trump taking office, the DEA could be headed for some huge changes anyway. It’s all very fluid right now, so stay informed on all the news related to hemp science at HempScience.news

Recent research certainly seems to suggest just that. Modified citrus pectin may help to inhibit the expression of galectin-3 —  a type of protein that has been recognized as a biomarker of cancer. Scientists have struggled to create a pharmaceutical product that can combat the overexpression of galectin-3, but evidence of modified citrus pectin’s ability to prevent it continues to mount. (RELATED: Learn more about the healing power of nutritional supplements at SupplementsReport.com)

What is galectin-3, and what does it do?

Galectins are a group of proteins that belong to the lectin family, characterized by their galactose-specific carbohydrate recognition domain. Galectin-3 is one of the most studied galectins, and research continues to show that it is both directly and indirectly connected to cancer cell activity and may contribute to cancer progression in a number of different ways, including cancer progression and metastasis.

Galectin-3 is not all bad, though. It is produced by the human body and is necessary for tissue growth and repair. Excessive production of the protein, however, is likely to become problematic. An excessively high level of galactin-3 is a biomarker for cancer, as well as a strong indicator of heart disease and kidney disease. Researchers now believe that in addition to being an indicator of disease, galectin-3 is also capable of encouraging the growth and spread of cancer.

One of the functions of galectin-3 is to actually stoke immune system response and create inflammation, to help destroy invading pathogens after tissue damage. In cases of injury, galectin-3 serves to help “seal off” the area by causing chronic inflammation.

Galectin-3 promotes cancer growth and proliferation in a few different ways. Essentially, it makes it easier for cancer cells to adhere to the walls of blood vessels, and in this way, helps the cancer spread. The protein is also produced by cancer cells themselves, which can further their proliferation. Galectin-3 is also said to help malignant cells escape apoptosis, or programmed cell death. In turn, these cancerous cells can continue to multiply, and produce more galectin-3.

Fortunately, there appears to be a natural way to curb this vicious cycle.

Modified citrus pectin: what it is, and how it can help

Modified citrus pectin, or MCP for short, is a complex carbohydrate, similar to the natural pectin found in fruit. Pectin contains galactosides (sugar molecules), which are capable of bonding with galectin-3. The binding activity of MCP’s galactosides to galectin-3 blocks the protein’s damaging behavior and disrupts its signaling abilities. To put it simply, MCP essentially shuts down the galectin-3 protein and stops its harmful effects in their tracks. This could be useful not just in cancer treatment, but in other areas as well.

In an animal study, MCP not only inhibited the levels of galectin-3, it also reversed inflammation, fibrosis and thickening of blood vessel walls. This finding suggests that in the instance of heart disease, MCP can help to reverse the damaging effects of excessive galectin-3, and undo the changes that can often lead to heart failure. (RELATED: Learn more about the disease prevention properties of natural remedies at Remedies.news)

Studies have also shown that MCP can stimulate the immune system and boost production of natural killer cells, which can locate and destroy cancer cells. Several different studies have illustrated these potential cancer-killing effects. For example, a study published in 2015 by the journal PLOS One found that MCP induced cell death in two different types of cancer cells. Another study, published by BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2011 found that MCP activated natural killer cells that were then able to target and destroy leukemic cancer cells.

Other studies have also shown that MCP may be able to help stop cancer from spreading to other areas. In animals, MCP has been shown to prevent skin cancer from spreading to the lungs, and has also prevented colon cancer from spreading to the liver.

Perhaps citrus pectin will prove to be the next all-natural cancer cure. While this research is only the beginning, it is certainly promising. Who knows what independent science could reveal next.

10 hard lessons the healthcare industry learned about cybersecurity in 2016 /medicine/2017-01-14-10-hard-lessons-the-healthcare-industry-learned-about-cybersecurity-in-201 /medicine/2017-01-14-10-hard-lessons-the-healthcare-industry-learned-about-cybersecurity-in-201#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-14-10-hard-lessons-the-healthcare-industry-learned-about-cybersecurity-in-201 Big Med has been hit hard this past year by cyber criminals intent on disrupting and disabling the industry. The vulnerabilities exposed by these attacks point to the need for more robust security measures in 2017. At issue is not only invasion of privacy when personal medical records are hacked, but also rising costs to the healthcare industry, which as always, is passed on to the consumer. And losing access to computer systems via ransomware could cripple a healthcare business, endangering patient safety. (RELATED: Read more cyber security news at Cyberwar.news)

Health Care IT News spoke with four experts regarding recent security breaches. Pam Hepp of Buchanan, Ingersoll & Rooney, Cynergis CEO and co-founder Mac McMillan, ESET Security Researcher Lysa Myers, and ICIT Senior Fellow James Scott offered their take on the most significant weaknesses, dangers, and insights gathered from the events of 2016:

1. Human error allows hackers an entrance of attack. Unconcerned and unaware persons are targeted as a prime defect in the system.

2. The Internet of Things and obsolete technology create a shortcoming. A connected device such as a digital camera can be exploited if the item is not sufficiently updated. This can become a big problem when an unprotected piece of equipment is not taken into account, because with automated tools in the hands of criminals, a single vulnerability can be uncovered.

3. Vendors and associates can be the point of entry for a breach. A thorough vetting of third parties is essential to assure security, along with having a good understanding between all parties.

4. Ransomware is malicious computer code that when superstitiously installed can render a system unusable until the entity pays a sum of money to the cyber pirates. Once successful, it’s a way introduce further attacks.

5. Cyber breaches are increasing in frequency. Medical data is a valuable for an organization to operate, as well as for a hacker to exploit.

6. Backups are key to providing continuity not only for hardware or software glitches, but also to elude the grip of a ransomer.

7. Impeccable cyber-hygiene, including improvements in infrastructure, networks, and software; and pertinent hands-on training, can eliminate nearly all pitfalls.

8. Cybercrime is big business, and the lucrative healthcare industry is a prime target.

9. Contingency planning and risk management are vitally important, to mitigate and recover from a worst case scenario.

10. Partnerships are essential as a strategy for success, for the ability to share expertise and resources.

We are all patients

One egregious shortcoming of Obamacare is the laying bare of patients’ private, personal and intimate information; things most people are reluctant to share with anyone besides their physician, if that. The ramifications go beyond possible public humiliation; the leaking of personal medical records could conceivably be a strategic threat to one’s career or personal relationships. Natural Society notes the idiocracy that reigns in Washington that has manifested as a sizable cybersecurity liability.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act provided $30 billion for the medical industry to digitize patient records. At first glance, this would seem to be a good idea; the quick, accurate, and efficient storage, retrieval and portability of patient histories would save lives, one would hope. But studies suggest a cost of up to $100 billion to implement, and the undertaking does nothing to save money, nor improve patient health. The glaring problem is that the software designed by Epic Systems, the firm that stores the largest number of patient records, does not allow hospitals to share them. So the obvious question becomes, why bother? This boondoggle is not only useless, it opens up patients to the theft of their medical records…all of the risk with none of the benefit. This is not a theoretical problem; it is already happening. You can thank the inept and unresponsive federal bureaucracy for this one. And so much for the Obama ‘legacy.’ (Read more news about technology glitches and failures at Glitch.news)

Vaccine pushers who promote mercury injections into children are “medical child molesters,” warns heavy metals expert /medicine/2017-01-13-vaccine-pushers-mercury-injections-into-children-medical-child-molesters-warns-heavy-metals-expert /medicine/2017-01-13-vaccine-pushers-mercury-injections-into-children-medical-child-molesters-warns-heavy-metals-expert#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-13-vaccine-pushers-mercury-injections-into-children-medical-child-molesters-warns-heavy-metals-expert On top of all the sicko pedophilia and child trafficking going on in America, there’s also the vaccine industry: A cartel of toxic mercury pushers whose denial of the periodic table of elements (yes, they are science deniers) turns them into “medical child molesters” as they demand more and more children be injected with toxic mercury, a known neurotoxin and potent heavy metal that causes brain damage.

As any genuine scientist or chemist knows, there is no such thing as a safe quantity or safe form of mercury for injecting into children. The continued advocacy of vaccines containing mercury — which continue to be pushed onto children and pregnant women all across America — is a crime against children and a gross violation of the American Medical Association’s code of medical ethics. (RELATED: Read more news about modern medicine’s ethical failures at Medicine.news)

As the lab science director of an internationally accredited heavy metals laboratory — CWClabs.com — I’ve personally tested vaccines for their mercury content, and I know more about heavy metals than most vaccine pushers will ever learn in their lives. (I wrote an Amazon.com #1 Science book on heavy metals in food called Food Forensics.) The simple truth is that mercury is a potent neurotoxin and it’s still being deliberately used in vaccines injected into infants, children and pregnant women all across America.

Mercury in vaccines is “chemical violence” against children

That’s a “chemical assault” and a form of violence against children. That’s why I’ve decided to start calling it “medical child molestation.” Hear my podcast below for more discussion. This means that medical hacks and vaccine propagandists like Dr. David Gorski and Calif. state Sen. Richard Pan are openly advocating a form of medical violence against children. Meanwhile, people like myself (the Health Ranger) are routinely vilified in the pharma-controlled media for practicing good science and working to protect children from a known neurotoxin. (Coming soon: News on Thimerosal at Thimerosal.news)

“There is no debate that mercury in any form is toxic. Scientists may debate the differences in toxicity between different forms of mercury, such as ethylmercury (which is an ingredient in Thimerosal) or methylmercury (from fish). But all would agree that mercury is a potent neurotoxin.” – Mark Hyman, M.D.

“The continued use of mercury, a known neurotoxin, raises particular concern for populations that are most vulnerable to neurodevelopmental harms, mainly a fetus in utero, infants, young children and the aged. When we speak of the health and safety of our children, our future generation, we speak of a societal responsibility, which we are privileged to bear… Many of the CDC’s own studies have demonstrated a link between increased Thimerosal exposures and the development of vocal and motor tics, which are generally recognized as autismlike features. This alarming association has been downplayed to the public.” — US Congressman Bill Posey

“That mercury is toxic cannot be disputed. To say otherwise is to pick a fight with the periodic table and the fundamental principles of physical chemistry. Consider the organization of electrons in atoms. Mercury is a large, heavy atom with more orbitals than lighter metals, like copper or zinc, and has a greater capacity to pick up and exchange electrons. …Mercury is thus a metabolic poison because it can insinuate itself into situations where it doesn’t belong.” – Martha R. Herbert, PhD, MD

“There is a broad consensus among research scientists that Thimerosal is a dangerous neurotoxin that should be immediately removed from medicines. Several hundred peer-reviewed scientific publications by the world’s leading research scientists, public health agencies, universities, and teaching hospitals have confirmed that Thimerosal is a potent neurotoxin that has never been proven safe for medical use and for which cost-effective alternatives exist.” – Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. from his book Thimerosal – Let the Science Speak: The Evidence Supporting the Immediate Removal of Mercury – a Known Neurotoxin – from Vaccines.

Canada plans to use vending machines to supply drug users with clean needles and pipes 24 hours a day /medicine/2017-01-13-canada-plans-to-use-vending-machines-to-supply-drug-users-with-clean-needles-pipes-24-hours-a-day /medicine/2017-01-13-canada-plans-to-use-vending-machines-to-supply-drug-users-with-clean-needles-pipes-24-hours-a-day#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-13-canada-plans-to-use-vending-machines-to-supply-drug-users-with-clean-needles-pipes-24-hours-a-day Concerned that the area’s drug abusers don’t currently have access to clean paraphernalia after hours when city health clinics are closed, officials in Ottawa, Canada have come up with a new plan to better distribute needles, pipes, and other equipment that addicts use to intake illicit substances: 24-hour vending machines. (RELATED: Read more bizarre news at Twisted.news)

According to reports, Ottawa City Health wants to start placing all-access distribution machines throughout the metropolitan area that anyone can access at any time for a quick fix. These vending machines won’t contain any actual drugs, but they will be filled with clean paraphernalia — all for free — which the city claims will help curb the spread of disease.

Many health centers throughout the Ottawa area already provide free drug equipment to users and abusers during normal business hours. But after hours is when many addicts use their substances, and when many of them might be in need of a method to use them. If they don’t have clean access, the situation could end up snow-balling into a major public health crisis.

“In order to prevent transmission of HIV and Hepatitis C, people need sterile supplies each time they inject drugs,” Dr. Vera Etches, Ottawa’s deputy medical officer of health, told CTV News in Ottawa. “We just aren’t meeting the need.”

Many of the vending machines will be placed right outside the clinics that distribute during the day so that addicts know where to find them. Advocates say they will merely serve as an adjunct to the system that’s currently in place, helping to avert many of its pitfalls and problems.

“They really are just an extension of the existing harm reduction programs that are in operation in the city and have been for the last 20 years,” says Rob Boyd, director of Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, which currently provides clean needles and other drug paraphernalia for free to the local community.

Drug abuse requires rehabilitation, not jail time

Not everyone is thrilled with the idea, however. One local woman told CTV Ottawa that setting up vending machines when there are already clinics that people can access during the day could end up encouraging more people to do drugs. Their convenience and anonymity offer a unique type of appeal, she argues, serving as more of a lure than a deterrent.

Another woman of a similar mindset told the news outlet that the vending machines could even deter drug abusers from the health clinics themselves, which provide valuable counseling and other services designed to help people kick their drug habit.

Ottawa City Health claims this won’t be an issue because each vending machine will be uniquely equipped with a device requiring a special token in order to operate. This means that addicts will still need to visit one of the health centers during normal business hours in order to access the free needles and pipes.

“They would need to be accessing our services, our needle exchange services, our partner services and pick up a token,” Dr. Etches added in a statement.

The city of Ottawa has yet to begin installing the vending machines because it’s still trying to identify all the locations where they’ll go. The municipality is also still in talks with vending machine suppliers who will create the systems needed for the program to function as intended.

As to when Ottawans might starting seeing the vending machines in their neighborhoods, city officials say an initial rollout is expected within the next few months. As for their cost, Dr. Etches estimates that the total cost for all the machines will likely end up somewhere around $25,000.

Plans to strip Planned Parenthood of federal funding could save hundreds of millions of dollars (and thousands of lives) /medicine/2017-01-13-plans-to-strip-planned-parenthood-of-federal-funding-could-save-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars /medicine/2017-01-13-plans-to-strip-planned-parenthood-of-federal-funding-could-save-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-13-plans-to-strip-planned-parenthood-of-federal-funding-could-save-hundreds-of-millions-of-dollars As part of the Republican majority’s plans to take out Obamacare and replace it with a free-market plan, taxpayers horrified by past actions of high-ranking officials at Planned Parenthood in selling baby body parts for profit will be happy that the organization’s taxpayer funding will dry up.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said the GOP plan is to strip hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding by adding it to legislation repealing much of President Obama’s signature legislation.

The Speaker said that cutting off taxpayer funding to the organization will be part of a “reconciliation” bill that also repeals the core elements of Obamacare, The Hill reported.

“Planned Parenthood legislation will be in our reconciliation bill,” said Ryan in recent days, without providing more details beyond that.

While insane Leftists like President Obama and most of his Cabinet, along with the vast majority of Democrats in Congress and some “centrist” Republicans, are dead set on providing abortions on demand, and at any point during pregnancy, pro-life and religious organizations have long opposed providing taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood.

“If the same liberals that champion Planned Parenthood really had any faith in the ‘healthcare’ they claim is provided through the organization, then they would have no problem dipping into their own, private funds, in order to keep the lights on in their local abortion mills,” RedState noted.

“As it is with liberals, however, they’re rather insistent that the public be compelled to fund their irresponsible lifestyles.” (RELATED: Find more news about sick, twisted agendas at Twisted.news)

To be sure, it is against federal law to use taxpayer funding to pay for abortions, except in certain cases to save the life of the mother. This is known in congressional circles as the “Hyde Amendment,” for the late Rep. Henry Hyde, R-Ill., which was signed into law in 1976. But when an organization is given $500 million a year in taxpayer funding to pay for infrastructure—salaries, building rent, utilities—it is a backdoor way of funding abortion, because actual abortion funds from other sources don’t have to be used for those expenses.

Nevertheless, Democrats even want this minor protection repealed, even though, as The Federalist reported, it has saved millions of very young lives. It’s just the latest effort in the Left’s war against the unborn and children.

Already Democrats led by Obama have begun criticizing and even mocking Republican repeal efforts. In recent days the president stepped out of his Ivory Tower and made a rare visit to Capitol Hill, where he huddled with congressional Democrats to strategize how to save a law that has become completely un-affordable for tens of millions of Americans, while reducing health access, insurance choices and other options for nearly everyone.

He was parried by Vice President-elect Mike Pence, former governor of Indiana, who was also on Capitol Hill meeting with Republican members to strategize a way forward in getting the law gutted, at a minimum, and replaced with a better plan as is the goal.

“It was a promise made on the campaign trail,” Pence said at a press conference after meeting with House Republicans. “The first order of business is to repeal and replace Obamacare … People voted for a better health care system, and we owe them that.”

“It will be a legislative and executive action agenda to assure an orderly transition to something better,” Pence added.

As for Planned Parenthood, it’s federal funding should have been cut with President Obama’s blessing after the Center for American Progress—in an undercover investigation—released a series of damning videos depicting, among other things, high-ranking officials with the organization discussing harvesting and selling of aborted fetal tissue and body parts.

Many of those discussions, between Planned Parenthood officials and CMP investigators posing as buyers for a phony research firm, were made casually over dinner and wine.

In retaliation, Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit against CMP, which a federal judge in California allowed to proceed to the discovery phase in October.

Study: Smartphones linked to rising cases of dry-eye disease and digital eye strain /medicine/2017-01-13-smartphones-linked-to-rising-cases-of-dry-eye-disease-and-digital-eye-strain-new-study-finds /medicine/2017-01-13-smartphones-linked-to-rising-cases-of-dry-eye-disease-and-digital-eye-strain-new-study-finds#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-13-smartphones-linked-to-rising-cases-of-dry-eye-disease-and-digital-eye-strain-new-study-finds As smartphone use becomes increasingly prevalent, its ramifications on our health are becoming more obvious. A new report in BMC Ophthalmology has revealed that children who spent lots of time using smartphones exhibited more symptoms of dry-eye disease. Giving up their devices for a month led to a reduction in their symptoms. (RELATED: Read more news on health problems caused by technology at Glitch.news)

Dry-eye disease occurs when a person’s eyes fail to produce enough tears. Staring at a screen means your eyes blink less, leading your tear film to evaporate more quickly. This causes your eyes to become swollen, red and irritated. While this is most often seen in older people, experts believe the problem is underdiagnosed in children.

People blink every three to four seconds under normal conditions; this grows to once every 10 to 12 seconds when looking at electronic screens. Using smartphones close to the face is even worse, as their small print forces the eyes to work even harder.

In the study, 916 Korean children who were between 7 and 12 years old were given eye exams. Of the 6.6 percent who met the criteria for dry-eye disease, 97 percent said they used smartphones for an average of 3.2 hours per day. Meanwhile, those who did not have symptoms of the problem averaged 37 minutes per day.

This is supported by a 2014 American Optometric Association survey that revealed that four fifths of children noted itchy, burning or tired eyes after prolonged electronic device use.

Another problem caused by smartphone use is digital eye strain. This is a type of physical discomfort that people note after spending two hours or longer in front of digital screens. The Vision Council reports that 31 percent of Americans say they experience eye strain, while 22 percent experience dry eyes, and 22.1 percent report blurred vision.

Interestingly, more than 30 percent of parents who claim to be concerned about how digital devices will affect their children’s eyes nevertheless allow them to spend more than three hours per day looking at screens. This is something that needs to change immediately if parents want to preserve their children’s eye health.

Less time with screens, more time outdoors

Children who are glued to screens all day also spend less time outdoors, which compounds vision problems. According to an Ulster University study, short-sightedness rates among young people have doubled in the last 50 years, with nearly a quarter of British 12- and 13-year-olds suffering from myopia. In East Asia, 90 percent of children have the condition, and this rise is being blamed in part on a lack of daylight exposure. A Chinese study found that spending an extra 40 minutes outdoors each day could reduce myopia in children.

With the average child between the ages of 8 and 11 spending 4.5 hours each day in front a screen, and the average teen spending 6.5 hours a day doing the same, this epidemic is only likely to grow.

How can you prevent smartphone-related eye problems?

The most obvious solution here is to curb your smartphone use and insist that your children do the same. A diet rich in carotenoids can help boost eye functioning, so be sure to eat plenty of foods like sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, pumpkins, broccoli, cantaloupe and goji berries. (Learn about other healthy foods and superfoods at Fresh.news) However, diet alone is not likely to counteract the bad effects of these devices. There are plenty of other reasons to eschew smartphone use, from sleep disruptions to privacy concerns, to the dangers of cell phone radiation.

If you must use a smartphone, limit yourself to shorter periods of time and follow the 20-20-20 rule: Give your eyes a rest by looking at something that is situated 20 feet off into the distance for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes of screen use. The Vision Council recommends using eyewear that can filter out the blue light responsible for much of the harm that comes from using smartphones. They also suggest reducing any overhead lighting to keep screen glare to a minimum, and staying at least an arm’s distance away from the screen.

This announcement by Donald Trump is going to make Big Pharma go berserk (podcast) /medicine/2017-01-12-announcement-donald-trump-big-pharma-go-berserk-podcast /medicine/2017-01-12-announcement-donald-trump-big-pharma-go-berserk-podcast#respond Wed, 30 Nov -0001 00:00:00 +0000 http://162.244.66.231/medicine/2017-01-12-announcement-donald-trump-big-pharma-go-berserk-podcast In case you haven’t heard the great news, President-elect Donald Trump is already taking aim at Big Pharma’s obscene profits. He’s announced his intention to make them (finally!) engage in competitive bidding to supply prescription medications to the federal government, which purchases over $320 billion a year in prescription drugs. (Yep, almost a third of a trillion dollars each year…)

On top of that, Donald Trump has also launched a new investigatory commission to look into dangerous vaccine ingredients like Thimerosal (made from the toxic heavy metal mercury, which causes neurological damage).

Isn’t it amazing that in eight years of being President, Barack Obama never tried to protect children from mercury in vaccines?

And he never even told drug companies they would have to stop price gouging the federal government, either.

Yet even before he’s sworn in as President, Donald Trump is already accomplishing more than Obama ever dared imagine. We can’t wait to see what Trump can accomplish over the next eight years. (Stay informed on all of Trump’s accomplishments at Trump.news)
