The same contaminated cell lines are used to produce vaccines for dogs, horses and even exotic animals in zoos. “This study opened up Pandora’s Box,” Ji warned. “There may be tens, if not hundreds of millions of pets that are not just cats but dogs and others that are contaminated with a retrovirus that is leading to immunocompromising their systems, which then contributes to why we have this exploding growth of cancers.”

Retroviruses are particularly insidious. They contain an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that allows them to insert their viral RNA into the DNA of the infected host cell. “That is a big problem,” Ji noted, “because that means that you can get infected by a retrovirus and it will alter the DNA, which is largely considered to be the heart and soul of what makes your cells and your body work and healthy.”

This contamination adds a terrifying new dimension to the ongoing crisis of pet cancer, which many holistic veterinarians already link to over-vaccination. The industry’s standard practice of administering a one-size-fits-all vaccine dose to a five-pound Chihuahua and a 180-pound Mastiff has long been criticized. “There is no science behind it,” said veterinarian Dr. Judy Morgan. “Why does a five-pound Yorkie get the same dose as an 180-pound Mastiff?”
