If you’re looking for a supplement that protects your heart from diseases, try CoQ10 – short for coenzyme Q10. Research shows that this supplement can prevent and treat heart disease, and it can also cut the risk of death caused by heart problems.
CoQ10 naturally occurs in the body and can be found in every cell. As a supplement, research suggests that it is effective in regulating cholesterol levels and treating heart disease. A study published in The American Journal of Cardiology demonstrated the usefulness of CoQ10 in treating people with high cholesterol levels and heart disease. The study’s researchers divided the participants into two groups: One group took Ezetimibe, which is a drug used to lower plasma cholesterol levels; the other group took CoQ10 in a nutraceutical combination.
After three months of supplementation, participants in the Ezetimibe group did not exhibit any changes in their cholesterol levels, while those who took CoQ10 showed positive changes. The intervention continued for another 12 months. The Ezetimibe group added the CoQ10 treatment for combination therapy. After the treatment was completed, the combination group that took both treatments reached their therapeutic target by 72.5 percent. On the other hand, those who took CoQ10 alone achieved a 100 percent success.
Other studies also show that CoQ10 is beneficial to people with chronic heart failure, hypertension, and endothelial dysfunction. CoQ10 is safe and well tolerated, according to all CoQ10 studies. For this reason, it is viewed as one of the safest therapies for the prevention and treatment of heart disease. (Related: Combine hawthorn and CoQ10 to improve heart health.)

A study published in the journal PLoS One and conducted in Sweden showed that CoQ10 can dramatically lower the risk of cardiovascular death. For this study, researchers wanted to confirm the findings of another study on reduced mortality. The current study looked at cardiovascular mortality for up to 10 years after intervention.
The study’s researchers looked at 443 healthy older individuals who took CoQ10 with selenium for four years. The researchers used this combination because CoQ10 naturally decreases with age, and Europeans are more likely to be deficient in selenium.
In the follow-up study, the researchers found that CoQ10 exhibited its protective effects during the 10-year period after the four-year treatment. They also found that CoQ10 supplementation caused a positive mortality risk reduction in participants with ischemic heart diseases.
CoQ10 has several important roles in the body. For one, it is used by the cells in the body to produce the energy that enables them to function well. The nutrient also acts as an antioxidant, which means that it can protect the cells in the body by neutralizing free radicals, which decreases oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress has been linked to various diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
CoQ10 also helps reduce migraines. The American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society report that the supplement can be used to prevent migraines. This effect may be due to its ability to keep mitochondria in the cells healthy. Some studies also suggest that it can help ease muscle weakness that is caused by statins, which are drugs used to lower cholesterol.
