Herbal medicines are effective for seizure disorders: Review

Researchers from Bastyr University in Washington reviewed the efficacy of herbal medicines in treating seizure disorders. Their findings appeared in the journal Alternative and Complementary Therapies.

  • For their review, the team investigated current research and history of these herbal medicines. In addition, the researchers also discussed the use of a ketogenic diet for controlling seizures.
  • Among the herbs reviewed, black cumin (Nigella sativa) and cannabis (Cannabis sativa) are the most documented anticonvulsant herbs.
  • Traditional Asian formulations, including xiao chai hu tang, chai hu gui zhi tang, shosaiko-to-go-keishikashakuyaku-to, were also included in the review.
  • Other nervine and nootropic herbs reviewed included skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), valerian (Valeriana spp.), jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), sweetflag (Acorus calamus), and gotu kola (Centella asiatica).

The team also looked at drug-herb interactions, especially on silymarin, green tea (Camellia sinensis), St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), grapefruit, and black and long pepper.
