New NIAID director promoted lethal drug REMDESIVIR as “silver bullet” against COVID-19

The new director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) reportedly promoted the lethal drug remdesivir as a “silver bullet” against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).

Independent journalist Jordan Schachtel expounded on this claim by new NIAID Director Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo in an Aug. 9 piece. A week earlier on Aug. 2, the National Institutes of Health named her as the new head of the institute formerly led by infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci. The latter stepped down from his post as NIAID director at the end of 2022.

Prior to her appointment at NIAID, Marrazo had served as the longtime director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). But according to Schachtel, she had also been “one of America’s chief hype women” for remdesivir. The antiviral drug, which was initially touted as the main treatment for COVID-19, eventually gained a reputation as “an unsafe and catastrophically failed treatment” for the disease.

“Hospitals are on the razor’s edge,” Marrazzo remarked back in July 2020. “The hope was maybe, if you treat early in the disease, you don’t need a silver bullet [like remdesivir].”

Later in 2020, the now-NIAID director admitted that UAB’s hospital system is in “a really challenging situation.” She added: “We don’t have enough remdesivir to treat everybody who’s in the hospital.”

“In interview after interview, Marazzo had nothing but good things to say about remdesivir – despite the incredible lack of data available to support her outlandish claims about the drug,” Schachtel wrote.

Her gushing praise was not only limited to interviews with media outlets. She also expressed admiration toward remdesivir on social media, boasting that the hospital under her purview tries to use it on every COVID-19 patient. She also declared it as “the best agent” against the disease, while denouncing harmless and low-cost treatments such as hydroxychloroquine.

Interestingly, Fauci himself lauded remdesivir as the “standard of care” for COVID-19 treatment. He even claimed that this lethal drug can “block the virus” responsible for the disease.

This led the independent journalist to remark: “Unsupported pseudo-scientific claims about very expensive drugs … is nothing new for NIAID officials who, under Fauci, have created an agency that acts as a government marketing department for pharmaceutical companies.”

Conflict of interest: UAB largely involved in remdesivir’s development

One might wonder why Marrazzo is shilling for the super-expensive remdesivir that, according to Schachtel, costs COVID-19 patients “thousands of dollars” for a full course. This is because UAB, the university she previously worked for, has played a major role in the research and development of remdesivir. The institution partnered with Gilead Sciences, the pharmaceutical firm that makes the drug. (Related: The war on Hydroxychloroquine can be traced back to Gilead, the drug maker looking to profit big from Remdesivir.)

Remdesivir was developed more than 10 years ago as a potential treatment for hepatitis C and respiratory syncytial virus. But when COVID-19 hysteria reached the U.S., it was suddenly repurposed to address the disease.

Contrary to Marrazzo’s bragging about remdesivir, it had disastrous implications for patients hospitalized at UAB. Instead of being a “silver bullet,” it was nicknamed “run, death is near” due to its severe side effects. Studies on remdesivir also showed that it can severely injure vital organs such as the heart and kidneys, while providing zero clinical benefits to COVID-19 patients.

“Given the UAB-Gilead partnership, one would think that Marrazzo would refrain from commenting on issues through which she maintained a clear conflict of interest. Or at the very least, she had the duty to disclose her conflict of interest when speaking to the media about the UAB-developed ‘wonder drug.’ She did no such thing,” Schachtel wrote.

“She last promoted the unsafe drug in December 2021, long after most hospitals stopped treating patients with the Gilead-UAB disaster drug. Marrazzo has never publicly expressed remorse for her longtime promotion of the drug she once described as a ‘silver bullet’ against COVID-19.”
